Have or Have Not

Posted: July 08, 2020 by Carrie Di Pilato

I want to talk to you a little bit today about haves and have nots. And I might give a quick little warning here. If you're feeling a bit sensitive today, this is probably not the right podcast for you. We're at the end of the second quarter. We've just started the third quarter of the year, and I'm having conversations with folks, and it's super interesting to me, right? Some of them are telling me and really telling themselves, right, that business is off. Those goals that they created in November, they are not tracking towards and the reason they're not tracking towards them is because of COVID.

And yet I'm having these other conversations with people who are absolutely tracking, if not exceeding the goals that they created in November, not knowing of course, that COVID was coming and they're on track. And the reason they're giving for them achieving is because of COVID. Now, wait a minute. How can you be both? That makes no sense. Well, when I ask those who have, their answer is they don't have a choice. Very interesting, right?

What's the outcome of this? Well, the outcome is that the delta between those people that have and those people that have not is getting bigger than it's ever been. I mean, those people who have not succeeded, they have not succeeded at an exceptionally high level. And those people that are succeeding, they are succeeding at an exceptionally high level. That delta is just so much bigger than I've ever seen. These folks that created these what seem to be crazy goals back in November, and here they are. Here they are, and they're on track despite COVID.

Here's the big question today. Why? What is the difference between the people that have and the people that have not? And I want to tell you a little story. My father was a smoker. He smoked two packs a day. I'm not sure how long he smoked, but he said he couldn't quit. He said that he just couldn't. I didn't understand and I wouldn't understand. And he said he couldn't quit right up until the doctor said that he had cancer. And then you know what happened? He suddenly found the courage, the strength, the discipline to quit smoking. The problem was that it was too late and he died on September 4th, 1986 at the age of 44 years old. He missed so much.

And I don't want you to let that same fate happen to your career. Don't wait until it's too late. Ask and answer the question, "What would I be doing in my business if my life absolutely depended on it?" Think about that for a second, the real purpose, the real calling the real why, real energy behind it, not, "Oh, I'd like to dabble. I'm interested." No, no, no. I'm talking about real world commitment. Your kids' college education, the legacy of your family, your marriage, your health and vitality, it depends on you doing the thing. What would you do if the life of your business depended on your actions?

I can tell you what I think. You'd be shooting videos like crazy. Nobody would ever be afraid of videos. You'd be role playing every morning. You'd be calling all of your leads every day at least for an hour. You would be calling all your for sale by owners and your expireds. And you would be looking at people two years back on expireds. You'd be calling your past clients and sphere of influence every single day making sure that you connected with everybody every month. You'd be on these calls. You'd be listening to podcasts. You'd be kicking butt every single day.

By the way, it's not lost on me that you are listening to this, so that is absolutely a start and it shows that you are the right person. You are the person that should have. You are not the person that should have not. It's time to be honest with ourselves. We all do things that are 100% not in alignment with what we say we are committed to. It's time to say no to those things. It's time to actually live in the discipline, in the action necessary to achieve.

We are two quarters through the year. We have time. If we have not yet achieved, if we are not yet on track, if we are not yet taking the actions necessary, we have time to flip the script. We have time to make a change. We have time to change the outcomes. We need only establish that we are committed and that the life of our businesses depend on it.
